Job description

at the University of Jyväskylä is seeking to recruit :

a Postdoctoral Researcher (Social Sciences), for a fixed-term period of 2.1.2024-31.12.2026 (or as agreed).

The position is allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and to the profiling area of planetary well-being and sustainability transitions. Research in this area comprises social scientific and interdisciplinary sustainability studies research with a focus on sustainability transitions and the transformation of well-being thinking and policies to support societal transformations and justice.

Duties and requirements

The main task of the to-be-recruited researcher is to conduct social scientific research on the ongoing / starting research projects on sustainability transitions and just and sustainable well-being at the JYU. The applicants’ research is expected to link to one or more of the following research themes :

  • Just sustainability transitions in food systems
  • Planetary well-being and sustainability transitions
  • Cohabitability and the ethical sustainability of land use

The applicant is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in social sciences or philosophy, but other suitable academic backgrounds will also be taken into consideration. The position necessitates excellent command of empirical social scientific research, familiarity with sustainability transition studies, and capacities for both independent and collaborative research. Interdisciplinary experience is highly valued. Evidence of professional engagement into societal impact and / or teaching is an asset.

Besides research, we expect the chosen candidate to contribute to the development and content production for sustainability transitions related teaching. The primary place for teaching activities and collaborative research is Jyväskylä.

The candidates are expected to conduct research at high international level, and a good command of English is required for this position. The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The qualification requirements should be met by the closing of the application time.

The postdoctoral researcher positions are rated on levels 5-6 in the YPJ salary system for Finnish universities. At the beginning of the work contract, the monthly salary (gross income, excluding holiday bonus) in this postdoctoral researcher position will be approximately 3.300–4.100 €, depending on the qualifications and prior experience of the candidate.

Six months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.
